Contrary to expectations, the adjustment to having a baby and becoming a parent is not joyful for many women. It is estimated that 10-20 percent of all women giving birth will experience post natal depression, and a much higher number experience some distress in making the transition to being a mother. An integral part of the Maternal Mental Health Service is the therapy groups offered, which serve to normalise and address the issues underlying these women's distress. In this paper I present the "Adjustment to Parenthood" group which has been developed in response to the common themes experienced by our clients. The group is psychoeducational with a CBT orientation. Sessions include expectations and realities of motherhood, understanding PND, skills training and relapse prevention. Also included is a session for partners. Group content is presented as well as initial outcome measures. Common issues in running groups with this population are discussed.
